What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a biocompatible titanium post that Dr. Rendon secures inside your jawbone. The post holds a tooth replacement called a crown.
Dental implants are the only way to truly replicate having a natural tooth because an implant stimulates your jaw in the same way that a natural tooth does. This prevents bone loss, something that’s otherwise inevitable.
How does the dental implant process work?
Dr. Rendon performs a comprehensive evaluation first, including an oral exam and radiographs. You’ll discuss the upcoming treatment with Dr. Rendon, so you’ll know what to expect.
Next, Dr. Rendon removes the tooth that you’re replacing. In many cases, he can remove the tooth and install your new dental implant in the same surgery.
Usually, the procedure only takes an hour or so. You’ll be awake for the whole process, but you’ll be comfortable thanks to local anesthesia. You may even be able to drive yourself to and from your appointment. Dr. Rendon will tell you if you need a driver.
What is recovery like after I get a dental implant?
Most patients take just two days off work — the day of and the day after the procedure. You can resume your normal routine as your jaw heals in the next 3-6 months. During the healing process, your new dental implant post will fuse to your jawbone to give it the stability needed to support your future permanent crown. In the meantime, you’ll wear a temporary crown.
What happens when I complete the restoration?
After the healing period, Dr. Rendon checks to make sure your implant is correctly fused in place. Then, he makes a mold of your jaws.
The impression then goes to a trusted laboratory, where your custom crown is made. This typically takes around two weeks. Then, you’ll return so Dr. Rendon can place your permanent crown. With your new dental implant complete, you can enjoy full use of your new tooth.
Are there other kinds of implants?
Dr. Rendon and his team offer different implant options that can be suited to each patient’s unique needs.
Whole mouth replacements
If you need a whole mouth replacement, the All-on-4® system might be a good option for you. This system has four dental implants per arch, and the implants can secure a full arch of dentures.
